Spring Term 2022 Highlights
Spring Term Music News
It has been fabulous to run live concerts with a live audience this term. Read on below to find out what our musicians have been up to this term. If you missed our Gala Concert the recording is available here to watch (click below):
Gala Concert
After an absence of three years the Gala Concert was an opportunity for our larger ensembles to perform in the majestic surroundings of Portsmouth Cathedral. It was fabulous to see over 200 young musicians performing in 10 different ensembles. Sinfonietta is the first orchestra that our young musicians join. The strings, wind and brass players of this group performed three pieces as sections and then joined together as a full 45 piece orchestra, complete with percussion, in a toe-tapping performance of Havana. The Latin American theme was continued with the debut performance of our percussion ensemble, showcasing our new marimba.
Always a highlight of any PGS Concert, PGS Brass’s powerful performances of Blaze Away, the Light Cavalry Overture and Sweet Caroline did not fail to excite the audience. Concert Band’s performances of Uptown Funk, Defying Gravity, How to Train Your Dragon and encore Happy! continued the high energy feel before the Symphony Orchestra demonstrated superbly controlled energetic playing in a remarkable performance of two movements from Haydn’s London Symphony. Chamber Choir and Community Choir were joined by a jazz trio for a sophisticated performance of Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass.
The concert closed with a world premier performance of year 13 composer, Benedict Blythe’s, ethereal setting of the words for the Requiem Introit. Written in memory of PGS’s much-loved DT technician “Mac” MacDonald, Benedict explored space, texture and timbre in a creative and imaginative setting using 8-part choir, soprano soloist, string octet, synthesiser, organ and electronic soundscape, using the entire space of the cathedral! Whilst reflective and meditative at the outset it finishes with a life affirming climax. Thank you to all the musicians and to the supportive and enthusiastic audience!
Majestic Messiah
After an absence of three years the Cathedral Choir performed their tradition Lenten performance of Handel’s Messiah to a packed cathedral this Saturday. Accompanied by a professional Baroque orchestra this performance was exhilarating, energetic and fresh-sounding. Featuring 29 PGS musicians from the Juniors and Seniors and first-rate solo performances from year 13 singers Daisy and Stephanie and year 7 choristers Noah and Daniel this was a hugely enjoyable performance.
PGS rocks out with Spring Concert
On Thursday 17 March our rock and jazz musicians entertained a pleasingly full DRT in an evening of contemporary popular music. Featuring performances from year 7 to 13 and including a staff vocal group, this was a fantastic evening celebrating the wide range of talent amongst our young musicians in a variety of different popular styles. From small jazz ensembles, to Big Band, trombone ensemble, close harmony and the 6th form rock band it was wonderful that whether debut performer or seasoned pro, all the musicians took to performing on stage as if covid had never stopped them doing it!
Chamber Choir Sing Evensong with Prebendal School
Chamber Choir was delighted to be joined by the Chamber Choir of Prebendal School on Wednesday 16 March to sing Evensong at Portsmouth Cathedral. Year 11 organist, Sam (pictured below) played the opening voluntary. The choirs made an impressive sound in Noble's setting of the canticles in B minor, along with Philip Wilby's anthem, If Ye Love Me and responses by Richard Shephard.
World Premiere Performance of Dr Shahov's Piano Quintet
A Musical Celebration!
Dr Shahov's new piano quintet was given its world premiere performance at the Wigmore Hall on 7 March. The concert was broadcast live on Radio 3 and is available until the end of March to listen to. Video performances are also available on the Wigmore Hall site for a limited time: Click here . Do listen to this very exciting music played by a fabulous chamber ensemble.
House Music - 3/3/22
A Musical Celebration!
Our first live House Music Competition in two years was a wonderful celebration of collaborative, pupil-led live music making. The imagination, ingenuity and creativity of all the house entries was wonderful to see and hear and each House Music Captain was able to make the best use of his or her musicians. From Latter and Eastwood’s innovative post-modernist quartet (Morton Feldman’s Rothko Chapel) to Grant and Barton’s exuberant, all-singing-all-dancing Can’t take My Eyes Off You, our musicians really demonstrated the whole gamut of musical styles and skills. Adjudicator, Carl Jackson MVO, commented upon the atmosphere of celebration and enjoyment that was evident throughout the evening and also the evident musical talent on display.
Particular congratulations to the following who won the individual sections of the competition:
Year 7-8 Solo: Noah Hemmings (double bass) - Smith & Hawkey
Year 9-11 Solo: Joshua Chatfield (piano) - Grant & Barton
6th Form Solo: Maisie English (voice) - Smith & Hawkey
Small Ensemble: Don’t Look Back in Anger - Smith & Hawkey
Large Ensemble: Super Trouper - Smith & Hawkey
Best arrangement: Smith & Hawkey - Super Trouper
Best Conductor: Stephanie Wade - Grant & Barton
Best overall programme: Smith & Hawkey tied with Grant & Barton
The final results, close as ever were:
1st - Grant and Barton
2nd - Smith and Hawkey
3rd - Whitcombe and Summers
4th - Latter and Eastwood
It was particularly wonderful to be able to welcome families and friends back to the cathedral to share in such a joyous evening. The Music Department are very proud of you all! Many congratulations to all involved. Here is a recording of Smith & Hawkey's winning small ensemble entry:
Spring Term (1) - Music News
Happy New Year!
We hope the New Year has started well for you and your families. Christmas seems a distant memory, and we hope you had a chance to watch our Christmas Concert recording (which is still available on our YouTube channel: - see below).
Thank you to all our musicians for their hard work last term and especially to the Brass Sextet who played for the Cathedral’s Carols on the Green service just before Christmas and to the choristers in the Cathedral Boys’ Choir and Cantate who sang such beautiful Christmas Carol Services.
Cathedral Choirs
If you are interested in finding out more about the Cathedral Choir and have a son or daughter who might like to be part of this wonderful group of musicians there is further information here: Portsmouth Cathedral Choir long with links to Dr David Price’s email address (Cathedral Organist and Master of the Choristers).
PGS Choirs
If you have a son or daughter who enjoys singing there are some fabulous opportunities at school during the day. Boys’ Voices meets every Friday from 1300-1330 with Mr Hemmings singing a wide range of songs in a variety of styles and is made up largely of boys in years 7 & 8. Girls’ Voices also meets on Fridays from 1300-1330, run by Mr Gunga (School Organists and Cathedral Sub-Organist) and is a great opportunity for girls in years 7-8 to develop their singing skills. If you have a son whose voice is changing then there is our Cambiata Voices (Changing Voices) on Tuesdays 1310-1340 with Mr Hemmings, supported by one of our fabulous vocal teachers, and former King’s Singer, Mr David Hurley. We work at singing over this transition period and pick music that suits the ranges of the voices as they change and help with techniques to manage the exciting new voice that emerges.
For singers interested in the fabulous repertoire of contemporary a cappella singing there is our Close Harmony group run by Mr Cotton on Friday from 1320-1350, open to voices in year 10-13. Our Chamber Choir is our only auditioned group and is open to Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass voices in years 9-13. We rehearse on Wednesdays from 1350-1700 with Mr Hemmings.
Our full list of ensembles can be found here: Rehearsal Schedule Spring 2022
Community Choir
If you are a parent or have friends who enjoy singing we run a Community Choir on Tuesday evenings from 1900-2030 in the Music Department and all are welcome. Please contact g.hemmings@pgs.org.uk for more information.
Please do contact us in the Music Department if you have any questions about any of our vocal groups.
Courage and Creativity
We have been celebrating musical creativity this January. Some of our GCSE composers have been working on exciting recordings of new pieces for Brass Quintet which can be seen and heard below:
Our jazz musicians have been hard at work refining their improvisation skills and ensemble playing in preparation for the fabulous workshop we had with the Kate Williams Trio. Our jazzers really rose to the musical challenges thrown their way and there was some exciting improvising and high level musical communication happening! A recording of the Live Stream concert can be seen below
5 of our Music Scholars in years 9-13 performed a beautiful lunchtime recital in the Cathedral on Thursday 10 February. It was fantastic to see and hear such confident and accomplished solo performing to a live audience after such a long break. Performing in a large space to an audience is a very different experience to practising and playing in the comfort of your own room. We were very proud of the courage and expressivity shown by Harry, Sephanie, Daisy, Will and Oliver, and thank you to Miss Kingsley for accompanying so sensitively.
National Children’s Orchestra
Many congratulations to Music Scholars Noah and Oliver in year 7 for both achieving places in the National Children’s Orchestra on Double Bass and Violin respectively. This is a fantastic achievement and we look forward to hearing about their adventures in the orchestral projects this term.
Instrumental Lessons
The importance of music on both academic and social development as well as wellbeing has been particularly evident during the last two “covid-laced” years. Our fabulous team of instrumental teachers have maintained teaching throughout lockdowns and for many pupils their instrument has been more important than ever. If your son or daughter would be interested in learning an instrument it is never too late to start. We have spaces available on most instruments, and are particularly interested to hear from pupils who would like to learn clarinet, oboe or bassoon. We are running an “endangered instrument” scheme for these instruments where we can loan an instrument free of charge (please contact g.hemmings@pgs.org.uk for further information). Application for lessons and further details as to how they are organised can be found here: Instrumental Lessons at PGS
We are using SOCS for all instrument lesson timetabling now. Most pupils and parents have been able to access this and have found this a hugely helpful tool in managing their timetables.
