House Music @ Home

The YouTube live stream of this year's exciting concert is still available.  Don't miss out on this hugely impressive evening of music making from all our House Music teams.  Each house put togther their own 20 minute mini-concerts featuring solo, instrumental ensemble and vocal ensembles.  In a very close contest our adjudicator, Anna Lapwood, crowned Smith & Hawkey as winnners and gave our performers excellent advice and feedback.

The programme for the event is available HERE

PGS Christmas Concert

We hugely missed our Christmas Concert celebration as a PGS family in the Cathedral this year.  We have, however, collected some performances from a number of our ensembles and are delighted to share them with you here.

Thank you to all the pupils for their hard work this term and for continuing to make music creatively and maturely in a different way to usual.  Thank you also to all our Music Department staff for their support and dedication in putting these performances together and maintaining their usual high standard of 1-1 teaching this term, and to our team of Gappers for their superb support of Chamber Choir this term.

We wish you and your families a peaceful and restful Christmas.

Miss Kingsley - Lunchtime Live!

Our very own Head of Keyboard, Miss Kingsley, gave a fabulous lunchtime recital on 26 November at Portsmouth Cathedral of Beethoven Piano Sonatas.  Please enjoy this on the Portsmouth Cathedral Facebook page!

Remembrance 2020

We would usually have been performing our annual Remembrance Concert with the LMP at this time; this is the first year since 1998 that we have been unable to do so.

We were, at least, able to record a small number of our singers and instrumentalists in the cathedral performing Peter Aston's beautiful setting of So They Gave Their Bodies to the Commonwealth.

The words of Pericles' Funeral Oration set to music by Peter Aston, arranged for chamber ensemble by Gareth Hemmings.

Year 7 & Year 11 Bands

The performances featured songs from well-known shows performed by pupils from their own homes.

PGS-LMP Remembrance Highlights

To Parents, Carers and all at Portsmouth Grammar School.

Having to face a situation where concerts halls have shut their doors and we are all confined to the four walls of our houses, it is a wonderful opportunity to find ways to keep connected and enjoy music together. I am delighted that recordings of previous PGS/LMP Remembrance concerts can be shared online, so you can enjoy at home, the wonderful relationship and music-making that has grown between PGS and the LMP over the years.

We would also like to share with you "At home with LMP”, an offering of virtual performances, both live-streamed and recorded for each day of the week with something for everyone, you can access it through the LMP website.

As you can imagine, the LMP has been very hard hit by the Coronavirus and we have had all concerts recordings, education and community work cancelled into July and beyond. The LMP musicians have absolutely no income for the foreseeable months. If having watched the online content, you feel moved to make a donation to the LMP players in these difficult times, please go to the LMP website www.londonmozartplayers.com and use the donate facility.

We look forward to November and the joy of resuming out relationship and music-making together.
